Northern Lights Festival

The Northern Lights Festival takes place during the last week of January every year.

The festival started out as a purely classical music festival in 1988, but has since evolved to incorporate genres from opera and jazz to chamber music and symphonic orchestras.

Many well known international and national artists have played at the festival, including Leif Ove Andsnes, Yuri Bashmet and Martin Frost.

More than music

In addition to the many concerts staged during the festival week, there are also many other events.

Northern lights cruises, master classes for musicians as well as outdoor events and lectures take place during the festival too.

Northern Lights Festival 2010

This year the festival starts on the 28th of January with a concert by the Northern Norwegian Symphony Orchestra and Barbara Hendricks.

Then the festival week continues with various concerts staged in venues all around Tromso.

Artists and orchestras performing this year include: Aksel Kolstad, Wiener Saloniker, Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and The State Hermitage Orchestra. See the full line up at the festival's home page.
