Hostels and Backpackers in Tromso
Unfortunately, at the moment there is no year-round hostel of backpackers operating in Tromso.
There is however a summer hostel, open between 19 June and 16 August, near Aasgaard, about 4km from town. They do not have a website at the moment, so it is unclear what might be happening to the hostel this season. Check on the Norwegian Hostels website for updates.
Budget Hotels in Tromso
It is however possible to find cheap and fairly good accommodation for not too much money, even if you are a single traveller.
Thon Hotel Polar lies on a cozy and quiet street just off the main high street in Tromso. Here you can get great deals on rooms rom a hotel chain that specialise in budget hotel accommodation in Norway.
Viking Hotel lies just next door, and also offer quality but affordable hotel rooms, including free internet. The rooms are quite small, but well appointed and clean.
A good option in the Hotell Nord, where you can get a single room for about 400NOK (bathroom in the hallway, but includes breakfast - which does save you a lot of money).*prices subject to change, please check their website.

Camping in Tromso
Camping can be another great budget option in Tromso, even if you are not an avid camper.

Most of the providers lie out of town, towards Sommaroya, in picturesque locations. Many offer northern lights activities, skiing trips, hiking, fishing and more.
Generally they are self catering huts, so there is money to save from making you own food. It is however recommended that you hire a car if you opt of a fisherman's hut, as you would otherwise be a little cut off from everything.
