Norwegian continues direct flight to Tromso

The flight from London Gatwick to Tromso in Northern Norway has been saved, at least for now.

Budget airliner Norwegian considered closing the popular northern lights route because of too many empty seats, but has now decided to let it run, at least until next summer.

Little help from Norwegian tourism industry

Norwegian ran a large campaign together with Hurtigruten last year on the London Underground, promoting Northern Norway and the northern lights.

But the airliner has been unhappy with the work of Innovation Norway in the UK on continuing the drive to get Brits to the Arctic.

“We’ve had the route ‘on hold’ and have had a close dialogue this summer with local tourism actors. We are not happy about the way Innovation Norway are working on attracting more Brits to Northern Norway, but we are hoping to see changes now,” says Daniel Skjeldam in Norwegian to NRK.no.

Hurtigruten with charter flights

But there is nothing to say on the British interest in travelling to Tromso and Northern Norway to see the northern lights.

Because of increased demand, coastal cruise liner Hurtigruten is setting up 3 weekly charter flights to Tromso during the northern lights season.

This means there will be no less than 5 weekly direct flights to Tromso from London this winter, making northern lights holidays more accessible than ever.

“We find that there are simply not enough seats for the price that match our package prices for flights and the Hurtigruten cruise,” Ragnar Norum in Hurtigruten tells NRK.no.
