November no-show for snow in Tromso

snow_and_sunNever before has there been less snow in Tromso during the month of November.

But the three meagre centimetres that fell on the last few days of the month meant that November 2009 did not become the first ever snow-free November in Tromso.

Instead of setting a new record it became the same snowfall as November 2000, where there was also only three centimetres.

“If we hadn’t had this few snowflakes right at the end, we would have had the first ever snow free November in Tromso”, says a slightly disappointed Stein-Erik Oines to itromso.no.

Dry and Sunny

November was a very dry month indeed. Tromso Airport has never seen less rainfall than November 2009, with only 9mm during the whole month.

The sun has even been out more than usual this month.

“The number of sun hours was the third highest since we started the records in 1943. 23,6hours this month – the normal is only 6,3”, says Oines.

But he warns anyone of hoping for more dry and sunny Novembers in the future:

“Normally, November is a solid winter month.”
