Northern Lights Holidays

Northern_lights_svolvarA northern lights holiday in Norway is the perfect winter short break, and will give you memories to last a lifetime.

Whether you fancy following in the footsteps of Joanna Lumley, going a northern lights cruise, spending a night in the famous Snorrisniva ice hotel, or just a fun weekend in Tromso, there are deals to suit your needs.

With direct flights to Tromso from London available at very reasonable prices, the Arctic is no more than a few hours away.

Package northern lights holidays

Many UK travel operators and agencies offer good value package trips to Tromso and to the ice hotel in Alta, as well as even more exotic excursions to the Spitsbergen islands.

The trips range from short 3-5 day breaks, to 11 and 14 day cruises and adventure tours, so there’s something to suit everyone.

What will it cost and what’s included?

Prices vary greatly from holiday to holiday, depending on length of stay and what is included in the price.

Most holidays will include the airfare and accommodation, but many will also include excursions and some activities, although that is more often than not an optional extra.

If the package includes a short cruise, for example with Hurtigruten, dinner onboard is nearly always part of the price. But please make sure you read the small print before booking to double check.

Below are a few trip suggestions to give you an idea of costs and what you get for your money.

Book your own

Nearly all of the time you will save money on booking each part of your Northern lights holiday yourself, rather than going for a ready made package tour. Read the guide.

To give you an idea – direct flights to and from London and Tromso may cost you as little as £100-£150 per person return if you book in advance, a double room in a hotel in Tromso will set you back about £120 per night (for two people).

In total per person for a 3 night stay this comes to about £280-330, leaving you quite a lot of leeway to book activities, excursions and other extras. This means that if you plan ahead and book yourself you can end up saving hundreds of pounds.
